Cichlids are an incredibly diverse group of fish with 1700 species. They range in size from a few centimetres (checkerboard cichlid) to 80 cm Crenicichla species. All cichlids are brooders. Their food spectrum ranges from microorganisms to plants and other fish. It is therefore important to be well informed about the species kept in the aquarium! The most common of these species kept in the aquarium areMicrogeophagus, Apistogramma, Pelvicachromis, Pelmatochromis, Nannacara, Nanochromis, Crenicara, Laetacara, Dicrossus und Ivanacara. Eartheaters of the genera Geophagus and Satanoperca grow large, yet also prefer small-sized food, which they seek out from the sand (hence the name eartheater).
